How it works and what to expect ...
The lymphatic system runs alongside the nervous and vascular systems. In simple terms, blood passes from arteries and capillaries to nourish cells and tissues - the resultant lymphatic fluid carries away metabolic waste and cellular debris and is then cleansed before its return and re-use in the vascular system.
Some things Lymphatic Therapy can help ...
Lymphatic therapy can be used to improve many situations from oedema to impaired organ function (i.e. where congestion exists around the organ), nerve fibrillation (to organ or muscle i.e. restless legs, projectile vomiting), sciatic pain, heavy/painful/congested legs (if caught early enough, can be helpful in preventing varicose veins), and is helpful in cases of cellulitis to prevent flare-ups. Congestion around the head and neck from difficulties at birth (i.e. forceps delivery can cause snoring) can be helped, as can problems in the breast area, within the abdominal cavity and digestive tract. Lymphatic therapy is very good for thoroughly cleaning out muscle tissue making for much better recovery from injuries and surgery, both old and new, or simply an improvement in performance/mobility.
Re-shaping & weight loss ...
As lymph carries waste products and toxins, it is easy to comprehend that blockages within this system can lead to an array of symptoms. However, lymphatic fluid left in a vessel to stagnate will, in time, congeal and set, thus behaving like a stone in a stream. More lymphatic solids will accrue around the blockage to increase it's size ... hence why some people, even after they've lost some weight, just can't seem to regain their original shape. Lymphatic Therapy can be very effective in re-shaping and the subsequent loss of the excess fluid can make joints and movement more comfortable, not to mention the clothes.
After the treatment ...
Because the treatment dislodges toxins held within the tissues, it is not uncommon to feel tired the following day as these toxins are processed and eliminated - drinking plenty of water usually helps, as does some activity.
The above are just some examples of how lymphatic therapy can help you or someone you know - the reason I explain something of how the system works is so that you can begin to understand that there are as many situations as there are individuals, but basically, anything that can help to clean the lymphatic system and aid it's normal flow can be of help to you.
